Monica de Guingand

Characteristic abstract ‘cows’ are presented as lines, blocks and squares recur as a symbol of Monica de Guingand's roots, having grown up on a farm in Brazil.

Monica de Guingand is a Brazilian artist based in Melbourne. Pursuing interior design at London's Chelsea School of Art, Monica moved on to photography and painting at the University of Tasmania.

Monica's paintings reflect her movement not as an immigrant but as someone who follows her heart. She questions binding and belonging through her painting. Characteristic abstract 'cows' are presented as lines, blocks and squares recur as a symbol of her roots, having grown up on a farm in Brazil. The cows or a bull's head graze interspersed with text etched across the canvas. Lyrical and ethereal words in Portuguese, English, and Latin create a sense of playful ambiguity and demonstrate Monica's roots that are without boundaries.

Monica maintains a strong exhibition profile in Sao Paulo, returning each year to visit. She exhibits in Auckland and Melbourne and she is represented in private collections in Brazil, Europe and the United Kingdom, New Zealand, and throughout Australia.
