Neal Palmer
Neal’s vivid paintings present enlarged details of nature. Using his visual language to evoke strong emotional responses, such as flax plants that conjure childhood memories of playing hide and seek thus drawing viewers into the painting.
Neal Palmer, originally from London, received a BA Hons of
Fine Art from Trent University, where his practice evolved from
painting to printmaking and then to sculptural installation. Upon
moving to New Zealand with his wife in the 1990s, he found
inspiration in New Zealand's natural treasures.

A starting point to Neal's processes is photography -
snapshots of time and place, the cut off nature of a photographic
image, a continuation beyond the edge, and the camera as a filter.
At the same time, he uses flat, geometric areas of colour to draw
the viewer's attention back to the artifice of painting
surface.
Neal's paintings are exhibited throughout New Zealand. He has
been a finalist in the Wallace Art Awards and Margaret Stoddart
Prize and he was included in the Los Angeles International Biennial
Art Invitational.
