Paul van den Bergh
“From the Dürer-esque minutiae and Bruegel/Bosch fantasies of the 1980 etching “Man with a Mask” and after a prolonged abstract phase, Van den Bergh has returned to the complex nuances of figurative painting through a surrealistic lens. The colour values are exquisite.” (A.Wood)
Paul van den Bergh trained in painting and printmaking at the
Municipal Academy of Fine Arts, Masstricht and the National Academy
of Fine Arts, Amsterdam in the Netherlands. He has been an arts
tutor in the Netherlands and in New Zealand. In 1976, Paul moved to
New Zealand where he and his wife Margriet Windhausen, a sculptor,
have continued a productive career.
Paul's paintings pay homage to his European roots. "From the
Dürer-esque minutiae and Bruegel/Bosch fantasies of the 1980
etching "Man with a Mask" and after a prolonged abstract phase, Van
den Bergh has returned to the complex nuances of figurative
painting through a surrealistic lens. The colour values are
exquisite." (A.Wood) Often depicting women, Paul's works feature
elegant profiles in fresh colours and strong compositions.
Paul has been featured in Sheens Lexicon of Dutch
Artists. His work is represented in private and public
collections in The Netherlands, Belgium, England, Spain, Denmark,
Israel, and Australia. Paul has exhibited throughout New Zealand
and his work is included in public collections such as Dunedin City
Art Gallery, Government House, Waikato Art Museum, and Christchurch
Art Gallery.
