Gyu-Joon Yang: All That Blooms

“Joon’s work is highly accomplished painting that suggests a divided world. They all carry a strong emotional loading of displacement countered by assertion and give a feeling of what it must be like to belong within two cultures.” TJ McNamara (30 Aug 2008 New Zealand Herald)

Joon Yang was born in South Korea and graduated with an MFA at Chung-Ang University located in Seoul. Since immigrating to New Zealand in 1997, he has further completed PGdip from Elam School of Fine Arts at the University of Auckland and another MFA from Whitecliffe College of Arts and Design in 2007. Now he resides in Seoul.

His geometric abstraction and Calligraphic expressionism is derived from a long standing tradition of both Eastern and Western cultures. He says "Since I migrated to New Zealand I have been through a lot of chaotic times mostly due to the cultural difference between Korea and New Zealand. Then one day I realised that there was a duality within my identity. It was like the contradicting notions of Yin and Yang, light and darkness, East and West. I want to take in and accept this duality not through confrontation, but in harmony and unity."

He has held numerous solo exhibitions in both Seoul and Auckland. His works are included in various private collections in New Zealand and overseas including the Wallace Arts Trust and the Auckland City Council.
