Lauren Lysaght: Red Carpet Ready
The red of the red carpet is the red of flesh. Lurking at the border of the carpet are the carnivorous animals that live of the flesh of these animals – it is a meat market. But the taboo that Lysaght exposes is how complicit we are in this particular food chain. We want this. We love it. We, too, feed on it.

The glitz and glamour of the materials and colour eclipses
somewhat the body of the landscape, which is, on second glance, a
desolate one. Scattered branches, hungry vultures, piles of rocks -
this is a desert. Red Carpet Ready is conspicuously devoid of
actual people - celebrity or otherwise. There is no flesh here,
though the red of the carpet and the pink of the rocks is somehow
bodily, like a body turned inside out or a flayed skin. This could
perhaps be the criticism - a metaphor of the absolute exposure of
the reality television industry in particular. In the words of
Elliot Smith: 'I get my check from the trash treasury/because I
took my own insides out.'
