PENNY HOWARD
Hiwa i te Rangi

4 JUNE – 18 JULY 2021
Corban Estate Arts Centre

Penny Howard’s practice explores narratives about finding her own cultural identity, being of Māori (Te Mahurehure, Ngāpuhi) Irish and Scottish descent. Her works centre around memories, stories and a longing of, and for, whanau, whakapapa and tūrangawaewae within her Māori and European ancestry. The recurring red thread in her works represents I Nga Wa O Mua, the Māori world view of taking the past forward into the future.

Hiwa i te Rangi was held during the time of Matariki. Howard examines this youngest star in the Matariki cluster (the wishing star) and juxtaposes Māori and European ideas about what it is to make a wish, a karakia, a resolution and what we wish upon.
